Sacramento, CA – Assemblymember Greg Wallis (R-Bermuda Dunes) today announced that his bill, AB 2503, passed the Assembly Floor with strong bipartisan support.
The bill directs the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) to review and update its heat illness prevention guidelines to better reflect the extreme desert conditions faced by student-athletes in regions like the Coachella Valley and other inland desert communities.
Schools in the desert frequently see practices go late into the evening, creating transportation and logistical concerns, disrupting family routines, and impacts to academic and athlete performance.
“Our student athletes in desert communities deserve guidelines that reflect where they actually live and compete,” said Assemblymember Wallis. “This bill is about making sure our kids can participate in the sports they love, with strong safety protections in place, while giving families and coaches the predictability they need.”
The bill has received strong support from local high schools including Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert High School, as well as from the California Small School Districts Association.
The bill is in the Senate waiting for committee assignments.
