Sacramento, CA – Assemblymember Greg Wallis (R-Bermuda Dunes) announced the recognition of Mosquito Awareness Week in California through Assembly Concurrent Resolution 170 (ACR 170), calling on residents to take simple steps to protect their communities from mosquito-borne diseases.
ACR 170, which passed the Assembly today, designates April 19-25, 2026, as Mosquito Awareness Week across the state.
“Mosquito Awareness Week serves as an important reminder for all Californians that mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance. They’re a real public health concern,” said Assemblymember Greg Wallis. “ACR 170 recognizes the incredible work California’s Mosquito & Vector Control Districts do to keep communities safe from dangerous mosquito-borne diseases. It also reminds us that we all have a role in this fight. Simple steps like using repellent and dumping out standing water go a long way in keeping our neighborhoods safe.”
Mosquitoes can breed in even small amounts of standing water, making common household items such as flowerpots, buckets, and clogged gutters easy targets. Removing standing water remains one of the most effective ways to reduce mosquito activity and limit the spread of illnesses such as West Nile virus.
ACR 170 encourages residents to take preventive measures, including regularly inspecting their property, draining standing water, and using repellent, covering up and taking sensible steps when spending time outdoors.
“Protecting public health is a shared responsibility,” added Wallis. “Mosquito-borne viruses are already here in California, and the best defense is a community that stays informed and takes simple precautions seriously.”
