Statement from Assemblymember Greg Wallis on Governor Newsom’s State of the State Address

Statement from Assemblymember Greg Wallis on Governor Newsom’s State of the State Address.

Sacramento, CA – “The Governor outlined ambitious proposals today, but Californians need state government focused on the basics: kids who can read, streets where families feel safe, and housing they can actually afford.

The record investment in education of $27,418 per student is significant. Now we need to make sure every dollar translates into students who are prepared for the future. That’s what families in the 47th Assembly District expect from their government.

A 9% drop in unsheltered homelessness is progress, but is that really all we get for $37 billion? When the state spends that much money and still can’t show which programs work or how many people were actually housed long-term, it’s the poster child for poor government delivery. We need accountability and results, not just spending.

As we move forward, we need rigorous oversight of how taxpayer dollars are spent. Every program should be able to show it’s delivering results. When the state can’t account for outcomes or track where money goes, we’re failing the people we serve. Accountability isn’t a partisan issue. It’s a basic expectation.

Housing affordability remains our biggest challenge. We need to continue to work hard to cut red tape and housing requirements that stop new homes from being built. Prices have jumped over 40% in recent years, and working families are being priced out.

While political fights dominate the headlines, California families need their elected leaders focused on delivering results.

I’m eager to work hand in hand with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to deliver what families truly need: safe neighborhoods, quality schools our kids deserve, and real affordability—from housing and groceries to energy and childcare.

That’s the work that matters most—and together, we’re going to get it done.”
