Sacramento, CA – In response to rising energy costs that continue to strain California families, Assemblymember Greg Wallis has introduced legislation directing the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to ensure that Californians have access to affordable, clean, and reliable energy options, including propane, as the state transitions to a sustainable future.
“We have an affordability crisis in California, and families are paying nearly double the national average for electricity,” said Assemblymember Wallis. “Propane is a clean, reliable, and cost-effective energy solution that reduces emissions without burdening working families with higher energy bills or costly infrastructure changes.”
Propane has no methane emissions, is highly energy efficient, and can be blended with renewable propane to further reduce carbon intensity. It is also a vital energy source for cold-climate, rural, and low-income communities that often lack access to expensive electrification solutions.
Under current law, regional air districts such as the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and South Coast Air Quality Management District have already approved propane as an acceptable fuel source—setting a precedent that should be applied statewide.
This bill is a common-sense, balanced approach that ensures California can pursue its climate goals while protecting affordability and reliability for all residents.
Kevin Morgan, Director of Energy for Rinnai America Corporation, emphasized the efficiency and sustainability of propane as an energy source:
“Propane is an incredibly efficient energy source providing an affordable energy solution for consumers as well as delivering reliable power with lower emissions. In California, its carbon intensity is on par with the electric grid, making it a smart and sustainable choice for clean energy solutions. Propane tankless water heaters further enhance efficiency, providing on-demand hot water while reducing energy waste and lowering emissions.”
